The Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India, has invited applications by ordinary post for 250 Deputy Field Officer (Technical) posts under Advertisement No. 02/2026. There is no application fee. The application must reach New Delhi by 15 November 2026.
This is a GATE-gated recruitment, and that is the first thing to get straight. A good engineering degree alone is not enough — you also need a valid GATE score in the corresponding paper. The listing accepts GATE-2024, GATE-2025 and GATE-2026 scores. The second trap is the mode itself: this is ordinary post only, to a post bag address. There is no online portal to fall back on, and a courier or speed-post envelope sent to the wrong address will not help. The third trap is smaller but just as final: you may apply for only one subject. Picking two subjects in one application breaks the rule.
Subject-wise Vacancies
| Subject | GATE Code | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science / Information Technology | CS | 112 |
| Electronics and/or Communication / Telecommunication | EC | 112 |
| Data Science / Artificial Intelligence | DA | 10 |
| Physics | PH | 05 |
| Mechanical Engineering | ME | 04 |
| Civil Engineering | CE | 03 |
| Chemistry | CY | 02 |
| Mathematics | MA | 01 |
| Statistics | ST | 01 |
| Total | — | 250 |
Two subjects — Computer Science and Electronics — account for 224 of the 250 seats. The remaining six subjects share just 26 seats, so competition in those smaller subjects will be tight even though the seat count looks small.
Eligibility
You need a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology, or a Master’s degree in Science, in the relevant subject from a recognized university, along with a valid GATE score in the corresponding paper. Check the notification for the exact subject-to-GATE-paper mapping before you choose your subject — the code you write on the form must match your GATE paper.
The maximum age is 30 years as on 15 November 2026, with relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC, and other relaxations as per Central Government rules. Pay is at Level-07, with approximate monthly emoluments of Rs. 1,00,000 as per the listing — confirm the exact pay details from the notification.
Selection Process
There is no written examination in this recruitment. Selection runs in this order:
- Shortlisting based on GATE score
- Personal interview
- Character and antecedents verification
- Medical examination
Your GATE score is therefore the gatekeeper. A strong score gets you to the interview; a weak one may not, however good your degree is. The interview date will be notified later.
